Skovridergaarden’s history

Picture
_On 24 August 1836, a group of townspeople formed Den Borgerlige Forening (the civil society), based at Svinglen, Nakskov, with the aim of supporting needy citizens. A pavilion was built where the society’s meetings could be held.

In 1840, a dining room was added, which was given the name “Den borgerlige”, where the town’s “bigwigs” could come and eat. In the years that followed, the pavilion was further extended to include a restaurant, a large hall (where the famous Thursday balls were held) as well as a terrace and balcony, where concerts were held on Sundays. The lovely restaurant burnt down in 1952 with only a small, half-timbered house surviving, which remains in the grounds to this day. In 1955, the restaurant was rebuilt in red brick, and its name changed to “Restaurant Svinglen”. Once again, Nakskov could boast one of the most beautifully situated restaurants in the area. In the mid 60s, the name of the restaurant was changed once more to “Restaurant Skovridergaarden”.

The buildings burnt down again in 1974, leaving only the kitchen, a private residence and yet again the old half-timbered building intact. Luckily for us, as this enables us to form an impression of how the buildings used to look when they were built back in 1836.

1976 was the year when Skovridergaarden was rebuilt – again in red brick. As the wish was that the building should also include rooms, five rooms were built in the new building and the old half-timbered building was renovated to house a further five rooms. In 1986, another wing was added, containing a large function room. In 1996, two further rooms were built in a separate building, making a total of 12 rooms.

In 1999, work to extend Skovridergaarden continued. In the separate building with the two rooms, six double rooms of international size (28 m2) and character were added. At the main entrance, a new entrance with ladies’, men’s and disabled toilets were built, as well as a special wheelchair ramp, making the hotel ideal for disabled and mobility-impaired guests. The terrace was also extended to give all rooms access to it and to allow the beautiful location to be enjoyed. The car park was made bigger and a new container yard was built, where all waste is sorted. These latest extensions have all been made out of consideration for the special surroundings around Skovridergaarden – to protect the environment and the countryside, as well as our unique location.

Skovridergaarden has been extended by two more rooms and is currently owned by Alex Pedersen and Joop van Galen, both of whom have extensive experience within the catering industry. Skovridergarden now has a staff of 35 employees.

Skovridergaarden today offers a wide range of events such as parties, courses, small conferences, receptions, overnight accommodation, weekend and golf breaks and catering service, etc.
